I/O Requirements of Scientific Applications: An Evolutionary View

چکیده
The modest I/O configurations and file system limitations of many current high-performance systems preclude solution of problems with large I/O needs. I/O hardware and file system parallelism is the key to achieve high performance. We analyze the I/O behavior of several versions of two scientific applicationson the Intel Paragon XP/S. The versions involve incremental application code enhancements across multiple releases of the operating system. Studying the evolution of I/O access patterns underscores the interplay between application access patterns and file system features. Our results show that both small and large request sizes are common, that at present application developers must manually aggregate small requests to obtain high disk transfer rates, that concurrent file accesses are frequent, and that appropriate matching of the application access pattern and the file system access mode can significantly increase application I/O performance. Based on these results, we describe a set of file system design principles.

متن کاملRequirements of I/O Systems for Parallel Machines: An Application-driven Study
I/O-intensive parallel programs have emerged as one of the leading consumers of cycles on parallel machines. This change has been driven by two trends. First, parallel scientific applications are being used to process larger datasets that do not fit in memory. Second, a large number of parallel machines are being used for non-scientific applications. Efficient execution of these applications re...
متن کاملA Static Analysis of I/O Characteristics of a Broad Class of Scientific Applications
Past research on high performance computers for scientific applications has concentrated on CPU speed and exploitation of parallelism, but has, until very recently, neglected I/O considerations. This paper presents a study of the production workload at the San Diego Supercomputer Center from an I/O requirements and characteristics perspective. Results of our analyses support our hypothesis that...
متن کاملA Methodology to characterize the parallel I/O of the message-passing scientific applications
The increase in computational power of processing units and the complexity of scientific applications which use high performance computing require more efficient Input/Output (I/O) systems. To use the I/O subsystems efficiently it is necessary to know its performance capacity to determine if it fulfills applications I/O requirements. Evaluating the performance capacity of the I/O subsystem is d...
متن کاملI-28: Gamete Donation from An Islamic View
One of the distinction between an ethical proposition and a proposition in Islamic Jurisprudence (Feqh) or Islamic Law is in their predicates. All three speak of the free action of human being as their subjects. Nature of human being discussed in this article according to Islamic point of view. Status of a gamete and nature of human being correlated to each other and affect to the conclusion. H...
